About Daniel
Hello!! I'm Daniel and I love tutoring: as an incoming Stanford freshman, I've been on both the teaching and receiving end of tutoring, and I understand the impact a good tutor/mentor can have on a student's intellectual curiosity, academic journey, and... life. I've tutored SAT Math, SAT Reading, competition math, and math classes up to Precalculus throughout high school to over 70 students. Additionally, as a Public Policy & Creative Writing major, I am also comfortable tutoring English and other humanities subjects, as well as offering college counseling services (in particular, I can help with essay writing). I've also received 5s on all my AP exams (AP Calculus BC, Computer Science A, Physics I, English Language, Chinese, German, Precalculus, and U.S. History) without ANY structured preparation at school, so I have a few tricks up my sleeve ;).
Outside of tutoring, I love baking (and even more so, eating), Hollister, Asian-American media (Beef, EEAAO, AiB), good music, skiing (though I'm not very good), and being outside. Please reach out! Looking forward to meeting you & happy to chat about whatever.

What sets me apart as a tutor is that I have incredibly niche music taste and I am a fire baker. Kidding (but we can always set aside time to talk culinary stuff/music) — I am big on learning by doing (i.e., I have more of a cooperative and participatory teaching style), and I think I bring a considerable amount of joy to my lessons. Please don't roll your eyes at that; I think it's truly important to fall in love and become engrossed with what you're learning, even if it's a "fake-it-til-you-make-it" situation at first. OK, don't roll your eyes at that either. For SAT/AP testing especially, I also have stockpiled soooo many tips, tricks, and study guides which I found especially useful coming from a high school that does not prioritize standardized testing.
A standard lesson will start with a check-in—what are you feeling, what areas do we need to focus on today, tell me something fun that happened to you today—then progress into a brief and VERY engaging lesson, and last into short practice tests/problems for you to try yourself. For test prep especially, we will do lots of talking about our experiences with the dreaded CollegeBoard, and I will focus on harnessing your specific skills and niches into valuable test-taking power, setting you up for success as best as I can. Trust—as someone who used to be a pretty awful test-taker, who would be flooded with waves of panic at the mere sight of "Name: ___, Date: ___," I believe I have essential advice to give my students about keeping your cool and putting forth your best self on test paper and college apps. I am just as much a confidence builder and support system for you as I am a tutor, which I believe is especially important for how much just pressure is put on our middle and high schoolers trudging through a long, daunting, and rigorous system of standardized tests and the even more torturous college application process. Often we think our entire worth is encapsulated by these test scores and what colleges we get into, and I am here to tell you that is not true: while these scores and decisions can open doors (very useful ones, at that), they are not testament to our curiosity, kindness, creativity, or capacity to grow. Too often, fear convinces us students to study longer and LESS EFFICIENTLY than we should, compare themselves to everyone around them, or chase accomplishments that don't actually make them happy. As your tutor, my goal is to help you earn the score and admissions result you're hoping for, but never in a way that is detrimental to your mental health or personhood. I want you to leave our sessions feeling not only more prepared, but also more confident in your own abilities.
Please reach out! Looking forward to meeting you & happy to chat about whatever :)

Daniel is amazing at teaching! He’s approachable and funny and makes the lessons very engaging. He’s well versed in many subjects from comparative politics to German.
Daniel has been my good friend for a long time. I remember even when we were young he used to help me with math homework and taught me how to do even simple things such as long division. He is a very smart person and puts time and care to his everyday actions. Along with his knowledge and skills, he makes an effort to always brighten every room he enters with his sense of humor and kindness.
