Find out more about Lyle

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I became interested in becoming a fully certified teacher and to make it my calling in my life when I was in Highschool. I found out through tutoring some of my friends and relatives that I had the ability to explain things so that they could understand which resulted in impressive and dramatic improvement in their grades.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have professionally taught every math course from Grade 5 through Grade 12. These included Problem Solving, Pre-algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Pre-calculus, Calculus, Trigonometry, Geometry, Statistics, Applied Math, Pure Math and the use of technology in Mathematics, as well as teaching students who required extensive help in order to learn.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had some exceptionally great teachers of Math who inspired and challenged me to become the best that I could be. They helped to make sense out of the subject matter and to show me how it applied to my life.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

To be a good teacher or tutor you must be able to explain things clearly and to check for understanding to ensure that the student has comprehended the material and can app[y the knowledge learned.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

My cousin came to me one day and asked if she could start doing her homework with me. She said that she would only ask for help when needed. I agreed and helped her for three days to ready for a math exam. A few days later, she comes running in yelling and very excited. I asked, You ok? She said she had just got 85% on her exam. I gave her high fives and congratulated her. She replied, ‘You don’t understand the best mark I ever achieved was throughout her entire school life and that her parents had hired professional on-going help but she could never do well. She continued to study with me and became a honors student in her course!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

One of the challenges I face in teaching Math is in convincing students that memorizing their multiplication table is easy and will save them countless hours of time and hardship.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I enjoy teaching all the math courses and appreciate some of the challenges facing students in their comprehension. My passion is to see the learning bulb light up and to view a student inspired and motivated for success.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

I am a Superprof because I have the ability to comprehend where students are having difficulty and to implement strategies that will enable them to excel in their understanding of concepts. I INSPIRE THEM TO LEARN!
