About Paul
I have been learning Indian Classical singing for more than 25 years with teachers in India. Primarily I studied the well known style of North India called 'khayal'. Since the last 10 years, I have focused my study on the much older style of singing in North India called 'Dhrupad'. I have studied under the Gundecha brothers which is in the Dagar tradition from Bhopal.
I am Indo-Canadian and speak Hindi where needed. I have lived in India many years and am presently also studying sitar with a teacher from Kolkata. This is deepening my knowledge of Indian Classical Music (Hindustani Sangeet).

The lessons will give you a first contact with the ocean of raga in which you will start to swim! It is an amazing and profound experience which you will enjoy as you learn the basics. The Raga music of India is immediately accessible and right from the start you will feel how sublime it truly is.
You will learn how to use a tanpura or drone sound along with your singing practice. The tanpura is almost like a sound bath in the background of your singing and creates an uplifting ambience. As you practice the raga and explore its scale and various combinations of the notes, you will find yourself on not only a journey of song, but even a journey of the self. For Indian music is so aligned with its profound spiritual knowledge that as you practice singing you will find also an unfolding of personal discovery.
The lessons thus will take you on a special journey as you practice the 'alaap' or expanded use of the notes and the 'jod' and 'jhala' or rhythmic sections. And with rhythm you also learn the mystery of the 'taal' or the beat notation cycles very well known in India but different than in Western Music. You will also learn how to sing in Hindi a poem or 'bandish' set to the notes of this raga.
