I typically decompose the theoretical work then go the practical work. I also give a lot of homework and personal reading material.
I personally prioritize an understanding of arithmetic and algebra above everything else. I typically engage my students in a way that challenges them to challenge themselves and explore various problems in the subject even those outside the scope of their institutional curriculum.
