About Hugo
Over the past four years, I have helped more than 150 students discover that physics is not an impossible subject but a fascinating way of understanding reality. I hold a first-class degree in physics and am currently pursuing doctoral research in condensed matter physics, which keeps my teaching grounded in cutting-edge science. My relatively short but intense teaching career has been marked by rapid success with students who previously struggled with physics concepts. I have worked with students across GCSE, A-level, and early undergraduate levels, and I am particularly effective with learners who need to rebuild their confidence. My students appreciate my patience, my willingness to explain the same concept in multiple ways, and my ability to connect abstract theory to tangible examples. I maintain a popular physics education blog where I explain current research in accessible language. In my spare time, I build physics demonstrations, participate in science outreach festivals, and play chess. I believe that the universe is inherently understandable, and my goal is to help every student experience the satisfaction of comprehending something that once seemed beyond their reach.

My teaching approach is characterized by infectious enthusiasm and a relentless focus on making physics feel accessible and relevant. I believe that physics education should begin with phenomena that students can observe and wonder about before introducing formal theory. For wave physics we explore sound light and water waves through demonstrations and digital simulations building intuition about frequency wavelength and interference before deriving equations. Quantum mechanics is introduced through the historical development of the field showing students how experimental anomalies forced physicists to abandon classical assumptions. Thermal physics is connected to climate engineering and everyday experiences like cooking and weather patterns. I use a large collection of video demonstrations virtual labs and interactive simulations to supplement explanations. Mathematical treatment is introduced gradually and always with a clear explanation of what the mathematics represents physically. I teach students to construct free-body diagrams circuit diagrams and ray diagrams as essential thinking tools. Problem-solving sessions emphasize identifying the relevant physical principles setting up the correct equations and interpreting results in physical terms. I also help students develop the precise language needed for high-scoring exam responses.
