We look, learn, try. Try again. There are no mistakes. Sometimes we look at shapes and learn to use them in sketches Sometimes we work with patterns. Sometimes we think about colors and mixing. Sometimes we make books out of our stories. We listen to music while working to free up critical thinking. We learn to create with love and joy.

I am eternally grateful to Debra and her amazing and inspiring teaching! Ms Debra was my master teacher while I was learning to teach and I have learned so much from her. While being in her classroom I was able to watch her weave art into every standard- science, social studies and beyond. Students from Ms Debra's class walked away better communication skills through her puppetry unit, as scientists through her investigation of the eye and as inventive thinkers through her intooba play and creation centers. Not only is she an amazing teacher but she is an extremely talented artist- depicting many species of animals through her paintings. I am amazed and in awe of Debra and can only hope she brings to you what she did to me- a joy of learning, wisdom, and being able to see beauty in all things around you.
Debra is an exceptional educator who inspires children to explore, create, and believe in themselves. Her engaging, multi-sensory approach encourages students to think deeply, express themselves confidently, and take pride in their work.
I met Debra four years ago when I began working at our TK-8. I was immediately struck by all of the incredible student work presented monthly on her hallway wall.
One tradition Debra began and led at our site was called "Endangered Species Day." Students created informational books about their chosen animal. Every page of the book included detailed scientific drawings and vocabulary. Finally, students created incredible costumes out of simple brown paper grocery bags that were inverted and cut in a particular way to create a wearable vest. Then, vests were painted and added onto to replicate the animal's unique characteristics. Then we made 3D headpieces out of various school supplies. This project usually took a month for our kinder through 5th graders to complete. Finally, We sent all students out on our school yard to meet with each other and share what they had learned.
Another semester wide project Ms. Debra worked on in her first grade classroom was putting on an annual musical. Beginning in January, she would assign roles and begin teaching song lyrics and lines. Again, costumes, props and sets were created for their May performance. Parents and other grade levels were invited to come and watch her students perform in her room. Every year she dazzled audiences with those performances.
I was continually amazed by the creativity and growth of her students. Through her guidance, they became artists, writers, performers, scientists, and thoughtful community members.
After many years at our K–8 school, her legacy of inspiring young learners continues to set the standard for excellence.
If your child is creative, curious and likes a challenge, then Ms. Debra is the educator for you!View more recommendations
