About Jonel
Hi, I’m Jonel but most people call me Raven! I began dancing at a studio in Gainesville, FL ~6 years ago when I moved there for my PhD. I was on Salsa Mundial’s teaching team for 3 years. While I was at the studio, I also was a member of the performance team. I have now graduated and moved across the country to be with my sister. I’m currently waiting for my next steps, but in the meantime I know God has given me a unique gift of teaching. He has presented opportunities for me to develop and teach group choreography, couple’s wedding dances, and individual private lessons through my previous dance studio. In addition to teaching dance, I have also taught undergraduate engineering courses at the university during my PhD.
Creativity and humor are two of my greatest strengths on the dance floor. I enjoy making my partner smile with a little silly move or a fun addition that incorporates background instruments in the music or even the vocals. My salsa philosophy is to dance WITH your partner, leave space for each other, and enjoy even the mistakes because they can make for learning and a good laugh. Having the opportunity to teach many different types of learners has been one of my favorite parts of this journey. I look forward to meeting you and improving our dancing together!

Hello! Thanks for stopping by!
There are many styles of salsa dance! The style that I teach (On1 Salsa) is a linear partner dance. I can teach both partner work and individual footwork/styling. Partner dancing does require knowing some footwork as well, otherwise you’d call it standing haha.
Before we start dancing, I’d like to meet for a mini consultation to determine your skill level and discuss any goals or expectations so that we can make realistic progress. No goals, just want to learn or improve your skills? No problem at all, we’ll discuss that in the meeting as well. I want this to be a satisfying experience for you even if you have no expectations!
My training as an instructor was focused heavily on developing the technique and foundation necessary to be a receptive follow and a clear lead. This will be an emphasis in all of my classes regardless of your experience! I understand that there are many ways to teach a single technique, I do not wish to constrain your dance - only enhance it. I will not be able to “teach” you rhythm BUT I promise it will come with time and exposure, so don’t worry about that. I do not wish to force any amount of information into a single class. If something prevents us from completing a concept or topic, I would rather give good instruction than rush and poorly teach a concept. Of course, this changes depending on the goal of the individual. I may assign optional, but recommended homework that will help drill some element of the technique.
I have experience teaching children to young adults (~78 years old). I have learned how to accommodate dancers of all capabilities! If you have any concerns, bring them with you so you can leave them with me when you go ;)
You can learn as an individual or as a partner group. You can also choose to bring someone but have me primarily focus on you during the lesson. If there is another person, I cannot ignore them completely so they may have to receive instruction also haha.
Most importantly, I want you to have fun! I am a very light-hearted individual and I enjoy creating family-like environments wherever I go.

Raven previously taught at our dance studio and she is an absolute delight! Raven does a great job at helping dancers explore their own style while encouraging them to grow in their technique and expand their movement repertoire. She is experienced in teaching beginners to intermediate dancers, and tailors her instruction to the level that each individual student needs. And beyond that, she is kind, funny, authentic, and a joy to be around! I highly recommend learning from her!
