About Harry

If you're reading this, then you already know my subject specialties and where I went to school. But, I have indeed had the honour of working with and learning from some of the finest experts in the fields on which my research interests tread. From King's College London (BA) to Leiden (MA) and beyond, I have worked hard to forge my own professional character so as to do justice to the discipline we love and the rigorous processes which underpin the advancement of knowledge.

In my, now, years of studies and in my professional life, I have recognised that all great people have been helped and aided in some way along their journeys. I have run small think tanks, podcasts and worked with some great organisation whose sole pursuit is positive change through learning and dialogue. My job, then, is to help you in some small way along your journey. Learning, scholarship and discovery is a journey that quite literally never ceases. Never.

In summary, I aim to impart two things to you. Firstly, a professional attitude to learning and the rigours of academia. Secondly, and arguably more importantly, I want to share the unabashed joy that the pursuit of those rigours can bring. A lifetime's worth no less....

On a personal note, as a student of mine, you are always in a safe, confidential and judgement free zone. So let's begin this and see what can't be done between us to get you the result you want :-D

Methodology (summary)
My job as tutor, as I see it, is to add my experience and intellect to that of the student in order for them to achieve the highest possible learning outcome; both in terms of quality work produced and the experience the student has in achieving that outcome.

What sets me apart?
Well, experience in study, analysis and quick adaptation to various subject matters within the field of history in order to aid in achieving the best results possible for the student. I have been exactly where they are and empathise with the stress associated with achieving the best result that one possibly can. They are engaged in a process which effects the rest of their lives and I love being a positive contribution to their study experience.

Mainly, though, I simply love my subject and the process of learning. Scholarship and independent study are for me, without being verbose, a way of life which I have devoted many years to and sacrificed a lot to pursue. I always aim to impart this enthusiasm to anyone and everyone I am simply talking to, let alone teaching.

Lessons
At undergraduate and post-graduate level, I find it beneficial to taylor curricula to an individual student as differences occur in module choices and specialisations. At high school or secondary school this is less, to an extent, less necessary as the scheme of work contained within the curriculum can be more readily accessed. Of course variations still exist between exam boards and learning schemes (EdExcel, AQA, OCR). However, the increased interpretative nature of under grad require a more responsive approach to both subject matter and pedagogy.

As such, an hour lesson plan from beginning to end might go like this.
1. Feedback on what progress has been made from the previous week's set learning task. These tasks usually tie in with specific assignments required of the student at that time; progress with handling complex arguments and difficulties with subject matter; and reading of texts or concept that we will discuss in the lesson.

2.Main body of the lesson consists of working through particular discussion points. These might be a topic for a seminar or presentation that the student might be required to give. I stress to the student that it is not my job to do seminar prep for them, but to discuss the academic subjects that they feel unsure about and structure a tailored curriculum which serves that students learning needs.

3. I find the main body of the discussion outlined above normally takes up most of the lesson. Depending on how the tutoring session has gone in terms of this main body of the session, a learning task will be set according to the subject matter to be covered in the following week. These tasks are small due to the workload that the student will already be carrying; especially at undergrad and MA level. Further reading regarding subject covered in the main body or relevant material for a paper to be written is often given.

As mentioned, I see my job as being an augmentation to the intellect of the student and thus plan my lessons within that framework.
