About Charles
My academic background includes advanced coursework and research in mathematics, computer science, and quantitative modeling. I also have experience teaching programming (Python, Java, and C), and I’ve designed coding curriculums that focus on both problem-solving and creativity. Whether you're preparing for competitions, looking to master difficult coursework, or just want to strengthen your foundations, I tailor each session to your individual needs. In high school, I led my school’s math team and student union, organizing large-scale academic events and managing more than 200 student clubs. I was also a national competitor in Science Olympiad, focusing on astronomy and geology. Now, as a research assistant at UChicago, I work at the intersection of molecular evolution and statistical physics, using computational pipelines to analyze sequencing data. I’ve worked with students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles, and I believe in teaching by listening first—understanding how students think, then guiding them from there. Whether you're in middle school or preparing for college-level STEM courses, I’m excited to help you reach your goals.

As a tutor, my philosophy is to teach by listening first. Every student thinks differently, and I believe the most effective learning starts with understanding their perspective—how they approach problems, where they get stuck, and what excites or frustrates them. I aim to guide rather than lecture, helping students arrive at solutions on their own with support when needed. This not only improves understanding, but also builds lasting confidence.
My lessons are interactive and student-driven. I often start by reviewing past material to identify knowledge gaps or misunderstandings. Then, I introduce new concepts using clear, real-world examples and visual explanations when possible. I emphasize structured problem-solving strategies—especially in math and computer science—and provide step-by-step walkthroughs. I also incorporate active recall, Socratic questioning, and customized practice problems to deepen understanding and retention.
