About Rie
I am a native Japanese speaker who has been residing in the US for the last 30 years or so.
I have received a BA in International Studies from Tsuda College in Tokyo and an MLIS in Library and Information Studies from the University of California at Berkeley.
My work history includes: a librarian at UCLA and US Information Service; an English instructor at AEON Corporation in Japan; and a Japanese tutor, both in person and online. Since July, 2019, my time has been solely dedicated to teaching the Japanese language and culture to students aged 14 or older.
I am a recipient of the EIKEN Grade 1 certification.

I use “Genki 1 and 2” textbooks and the workbooks for most of my lessons. During the lesson I focus on the grammatical explanation and exercises, but I also love to share the knowledge and perspectives only a native Japanese can provide.
In addition, being bilingual gives me an advantage such as the ability to point out and explain the common pitfalls students of the Japanese language face.
I expect my students to complete homework assignment after each lesson and encourage them to contact me if questions arise.
