About Kotaro

Prior to being a student at Queen Mary University of London, I went to an international school in Japan, taking IGCSE and the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. In the IB programme, I achieved the highest score (7) for my oral exam, which underlines my proficiency in Japanese oral skills. As someone that lived in Japan as a youth, I am well-informed with the up-to-date slang and other cultural qualities the Japanese language has to offer. I am also very interested in the sociolinguistic aspect of the Japanese language, and hope to teach everyone about the complicated beauty of this language. Outside of my tutoring, I am very passionate about UK grime, techno and house music scene. Also love a good night out with my friends in Shibuya or Camden.

About the lesson

What sets me apart: As someone who was recently living in Japan as a youth, I am versed with conversational aspects of the language only teens may understand. Things like shortening certain words, slang, and tone of words. I strive to educate people about these qualities through an environment that feels like you are being taught by a friend. This knowledge is crucial when trying to actually talk or understand the Japanese language. My Teaching Approach: Sociolinguistics Lessons- Understanding the "why?" of the language. Certain words and phrases we use that don't really make sense. You will be informed about these question marks in the language and build your confidence to use these linguistic terms in Japanese. Unordinary Lessons - Students can bring in their own material they want to revise. For example, students can bring in a scene from Anime to analyse together (gather ideas of cultural jokes/slang/censorship) Tailored Lessons – Adjusted to your learning style for maximum progress. Engaging Language Learning – Real-world application, reading, and speaking practice. Mainly focusing on conversational skills. Lesson Details: Materials in the lesson can be discussed and tailored through a prior meeting or chats! 60–90 min sessions with a mix of engagement practice, sociolinguistics learnings and feedback. For anyone wanting to learn Japanese and its sociolinguistic culture!
