About May

Hi, I’m a Chinese native speaker with native-level Japanese. My journey with Japanese began 20 years ago, and over a decade of living and working in Japanese culture has made it a part of who I am. I also speak English, so I can explain tricky concepts from a learner’s perspective—making them easier to understand and remember. For 12 years, I’ve taught in Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, and now the UK at the University of Liverpool. Most of my work has been teaching Japanese, but I’ve also taught Chinese and English to Japanese and international students, adapting my methods to each learner’s needs. I fell in love with Japanese at university—it opened a new world of people, ideas, and culture. My goal is to open that same door for you, so you can enjoy the language, embrace the culture, and find your own connection to it.

About the lesson

I blend Japanese culture, practical drills, and differentiated instruction to create lively, effective lessons. Instead of starting with grammar, I use real-life examples—often from films and dramas—so students can discover rules themselves, boosting curiosity and initiative. Lessons are available in 60-, 90-, or 120-minute formats, tailored to each student’s goals and level. With 12 years’ teaching experience across Hong Kong, Hokkaido (Japan), Macau, Shanghai, Shenzhen and in the UK at the University of Liverpool over the past year, I have taught students from primary Grade 1 to university seniors. I switch seamlessly between Chinese, English, and Japanese to suit different learning contexts and student needs. I hold JLPT N1, Japanese Major Test Band 8, a Chinese Teacher Qualification Certificate, and IBDP teaching certification. My culturally rich, interactive lessons are suitable for learners of all ages—whether for exams, travel, work, or pure enjoyment.

Perfect! Really enjoyed my lesson with May, very friendly and informative, accommodated the lesson on my needs and incorporated Japanese culture into the lesson. May had me speaking Japanese from the start, helping me with pronunciations. Had answers to all my questions and cleared up things that I found confusing. May also gave homework on things to practice for next lesson, looking forward to future lessons.

Olly is very punctual and was ready for the lesson right on time. He is polite and respectful throughout, and it’s clear he already has a strong self-study background — he knows quite a lot, even things many intermediate learners may not be familiar with, despite this being his first lesson with a teacher. He picks up pronunciation, grammar, and cultural points very quickly and shows a natural aptitude for learning Japanese. I think Sophie has two outstanding strengths. First, she is very punctual. Second, throughout the entire lesson, she was very cooperative and asked excellent questions. The whole hour felt truly productive with no wasted time. As for areas of improvement, I haven’t found any so far. Everything was excellent!
