About Sam
I’m a jazz-trained bassist and music tutor with a BMus degree in Jazz from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. I offer student-centred lessons, meaning I tailor my approach to your musical interests—whether that’s a specific genre, artist, song, or skill—while ensuring you develop a strong foundation in technique and theory. Too often, students are given endless scales to practise with no context. While technique and theory are essential, I believe they should be learnt in a way that connects with your passions. Whether you want to groove like Paul Chambers, master Jaco Pastorius’ speed and precision, or simply strum your favourite songs on guitar, I shape lessons around your goals to keep learning fun and engaging. In an introductory session, we’ll explore what excites you about music, identify where you are in your journey any needs you have, set realistic goals, and create a roadmap to help you progress efficiently. I specialise in Bass Guitar but also teach Electric Guitar, Music Theory, and Technique Development. My background includes coaching musicians and bands of all levels, from indie four-piece groups to full jazz big bands. I’ve worked with a range of students, including those preparing for ABRSM, Trinity, and Rockschool exams, as well as those looking to refine their technique or build confidence in their playing.

Having completed several university Pedagogy modules about the art of teaching, I’ve developed a deeper understanding of how different students learn. I enjoy working with musicians of all ages and abilities, including neurodivergent students, and I adapt my teaching methods to ensure each student learns in a way that suits them best. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an advanced player looking to refine your technique, I aim to make learning bass or guitar an enjoyable, rewarding, and personalised experience!
