About Lyle
I'm a senior data engineer and applied mathematician with a Master's in Applied Math from Johns Hopkins University. While I was there, I also spent two years as a teaching assistant in probability and statistics across courses from introductory to advanced undergraduate level.
Professionally, I've built data infrastructure for some of the world's largest financial markets — including pipelines supporting billions in daily trades for a US federal financial regulator. That experience means the math I teach isn't abstract to me. I know where it shows up in the real world and why it's worth understanding precisely.
I've worked with students at every level of the undergraduate math curriculum, and I'm comfortable with the full range from first-semester calculus to graduate-level analysis. My approach is direct and collaborative — I'm not here to lecture, I'm here to work through problems with you until the material actually makes sense.

My sessions start simple: show me where you're lost. From there we work through real problems together, building understanding from the ground up rather than layering explanations on top of confusion.
I don't use a rigid lesson plan. Every session is structured around what you actually need that day — whether that's a concept you've never clicked with, an exam you're preparing for, or a problem set you can't get through. If you want practice problems between sessions I can provide them, but there's no expectation or pressure to work outside our time together.
My background is in applied mathematics (MS, Johns Hopkins) and professional data engineering — I've spent years working with the kind of mathematical structures that show up in college courses: probability, linear algebra, optimization, statistical inference. That means I can usually tell you not just how something works but why it matters and where you'll see it again.
I work with undergraduates and graduates across the full math curriculum — calculus through real and complex analysis, probability and statistics, graph theory, number theory, linear algebra — as well as students in data science, engineering, and quantitative fields who need the math to actually make sense.
