About Carys
My name is Carys, and I currently serve as Principal Horn of Symphony Nova Scotia in Canada. I trained at the Juilliard School and Interlochen Arts Academy and have performed at Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Boston Symphony Hall.
I've performed with multiple elite orchestras including the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the New World Symphony, and I've been a soloist with the Juilliard Orchestra. Additionally, I've held community engagement and teaching fellowships at Juilliard, and studied with the finest horn pedagogues of our day.
Besides primarily being a French horn player, I enjoy doing historical performance on Baroque horn and writing program notes for various concerts. You can read more about me at (concealed information) .

I believe strongly in the emotional, social and cognitive benefits of studying music. Music should be fun, stimulating and at your own pace!
I structure my lessons based on both your experience and your specific goals, whether that be an introduction to horn playing or college/professional audition preparation. My experience as a teaching fellow at Juilliard and the Do-Re-Mi Project has trained me to work with people of all ages and backgrounds, especially beginners. I can also provide many of the standard etude books and pedagogies for my students free of charge.
No matter if you are a newbie to the horn or looking for professional audition coaching, I'm here to help you find your voice on this beautiful instrument at any step of the way.
Additionally, as a program notes writer, I'm ready and excited to teach you anything you want to know about classical music history and ethnomusicology! I am passionate about the importance of music history for musicians of all ages, whether you're taking a class or want to learn for fun!
If you study with me as a beginner, you can expect to learn how to play both your favorite songs and classical repertoire, with a healthy dose of music history trivia; if you're in high school, I will help you prepare for All-State or college auditions with all the confidence and technique you need to succeed.
