About Laura

Laura is an award-winning English teacher dedicated to helping students unlock the power of reading and writing. With over 15 years of classroom experience, she brings skill, insight, and dedication to making learning both challenging and rewarding. Named District Teacher of the Year in 2013 and Lakeshore High School Teacher of the Year in 2018, she has built a reputation for bringing both rigor and encouragement into the classroom. As a certified Louisiana ELA Content Leader and a dedicated tutor for students with dyslexia, Laura has a proven record of meeting learners where they are and helping them thrive. Teaching is a true family calling. She is married to a teacher and part of a family of four sisters who are also educators, all carrying forward the legacy of their mother, who first taught them the joy of teaching. Outside the classroom, she enjoys learning sign language and delighting in the kinds of puns that only an English teacher would appreciate.

About the lesson

I like to get to know my students as people first because having a connection is a great start to a teacher/student relationship.
I'll ask about your interests, areas of strength and weakness, and your goals for improvement. Then I'll make an individualized plan. I have plenty of resources at my disposal, along with my favorite teaching strategies, and will choose the ones that would best fit YOU.

A typical lesson would include reading a passage aloud, standards based questions to gauge comprehension, and a prompt for a constructed response. I will walk you through each step and offer guidance along the way.

I can customize lessons for grades 4-12 to help with reading comprehension and writing strategies, and even test prep.

Laura has been my child's tutor for some time now, and I couldn't be happier! She has helped my child with her dyslexia, and helps her to keep up with her coursework and increase her understanding of the material. Mrs. Laura took the time to learn how she could help my child in other ways. When my child was having difficulty writing, but excelled in comprehension, Mrs. Laura learned what it was that my child was really having difficulty with, and adapted their study plan to help teach my child with a different method so that she could continue to improve.
