About Kyan

I am a Physics PhD researcher at King’s College London, where I previously graduated first in my course with a First-Class MSci in Physics and Philosophy. My current research is in electromagnetism and photonics, and I have also worked in areas including gravitational physics and quantum information.

What I enjoy most about teaching is the dialogue with a student: understanding exactly where they are getting stuck, seeing the problem from their perspective, and working backwards until we find the underlying difficulty. I am extremely patient and am happy to break an idea down as far as necessary until we reach something the student understands, and can then build back up from there.

I find it particularly rewarding to see a student go from feeling that they simply “can’t do” something to developing the understanding, technical skills and confidence to solve problems independently and succeed. I am encouraging and relaxed in my teaching style, while still taking the work seriously and expecting students to engage and practise between lessons.

My interest in Physics comes from its ability to explain the world around us through the precise language of mathematics. From everyday technology to some of the deepest questions about the universe, I still find it remarkable how much can be understood from a relatively small set of physical and mathematical principles, and I enjoy passing some of that curiosity on to my students.

Outside academia, I enjoy running, tennis, playing the piano and reading, and have recently taken up drawing.

I am fluent in both English and French and can teach in either language. I also hold an Enhanced DBS certificate.

My approach is centred on genuine understanding and strong problem-solving skills, rather than simply memorising formulae and methods. I aim to make difficult concepts intuitive, using clear explanations, examples and diagrams before applying them to progressively more challenging problems.

Every student has different needs, and my approach becomes increasingly tailored as I get to know the student and identify their strengths, weaknesses and goals. I can provide regular support to a student who is struggling with their course, focused preparation towards a particular exam or deadline, or additional teaching and challenging material for a strong student who wants to push beyond their current level.

A typical lesson combines explanation with guided problem-solving. Rather than simply showing a solution, I ask questions and provide progressively less guidance, helping students develop the confidence and independence to tackle unfamiliar problems themselves.

For students preparing for assessments, I can also provide exam-focused preparation, using past papers and exam-style problems to identify weaknesses, refine technique and turn understanding into results.

Lessons are typically one or two hours and are available for GCSE, A-Level and undergraduate Maths and Physics. I teach online and can also offer lessons in person at the student’s home, subject to location and prior arrangement.
