In my years as a student I realized that the best way to learn is interaction. Under that philosophy, the lecture component of my class is frequently combined with cases that prompt my students to engage with the subject matter in order to have an informed opinion or reaction to it. I do so by implementing discussion boards online and dialogues in class in which art is viewed under different optics that have immediate or visceral impact in present-day society. My objective is to have students learn about art, its chronology, and its important role in visual culture past and present by developing awareness to it. The principles key to my class are objective observation, historical context, empathy, and openness to appreciate aesthetics from different angles. I am proud when I open my students’ eyes into appreciating art and innovative aesthetic forms. I know that I have done a good job when students thank me for changing their attitudes towards art, or share with me their pictures alongside works we have discussed in class. I keep an organized syllabus and class schedule with very clear requirements and class etiquette, all enforcing the purpose of having students engaged throughout the course.
