About Ruby
English is a subject which a lot of people think you either have it or you don't. I think this is nonsense. A flair for English can be taught and more importantly, a flair for the Leaving Cert English exam can most definitely be taught.
I have seen many students give up on the subject because they find poetry boring, or Shakespeare unintelligible. However, they are throwing away precious marks without understanding how easy English can be once you know what examiners are looking for, and how to construct an answer.
While I loved English in school, I recognize that many people don't, and I believe I can show you how to get the best out of the exam regardless if you love the material or not.
Studying law has been made that much easier due to my proficiency in writing and the H1 certainly helped me get there!

My approach to English grinds begins with identifying students' weaknesses within the curriculum. Common weaknesses such as a lack of variation and quality of language can make a significant impact on grades, and I would provide resources and sample answers with a focus on clarity and richness of vocabulary.
Timing can be an issue for many students, and I can provide a strategic approach to tackling the paper as efficiently as possible.
I can examine students' work and identify problem areas while reinforcing the positive qualities of the work. Then I will draft their answer with my own tweaks, demonstrating how those tweaks will garner more marks in the exam.
I am happy to personalize every lesson and work with the student's own strengths and the aspects of the subject which they enjoy. However, I am also conscious that the grinds cover lots of ground and provide a well-rounded approach to the examined curriculum.
I feel that English grinds very much require an hour to make significant progress, but I would be open to shorter, more targeted lessons also.
While I have no teaching experience, I have the advantage of the leaving cert being a recent event in my life of which I am well-versed on and frankly passionate about. In my year, 2025, only 5% of students scored within 90-100% in leaving cert English, I scored 97% overall. I know exactly what examiners are looking for, what really stands out, and how easy it can be to incorporate these aspects into your answers. I would like to tutor students in 5th or 6th year, studying Higher Level English.
