About Sono
I'm an artist with a 35-year career spanning the Bay Area, NYC, & now Austin. I have 30 years of teaching experience: including the California College of Art, the San Francisco Art Institute, Mills College, the Kansas City Art Institute, Anderson Ranch, the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and privately.
For the past 2 years, I've been teaching semi-private, 3 people maximum drawing classes out of my space at Thornton Road Studios in South-Central Austin.
My specialty is drawing and painting. Currently, I offer Drawing 1 for beginners, which is the basics of eye-hand & solid foundation to gain confidence, and Drawing 2, which ups the ante to understanding form, light & shadow, spatial relationships, and composition.
A few students who have been with me a while are becoming more advanced, & the menu of my classes will likely expand.
Though these classes are fun & communal, they aren't playtime. I'm looking for students who really want to learn: not necessarily to become an artist, but to see where their discoveries take them.
Here's what students have to say.
“I was fortunate to have Sono Osato as my art teacher. She is thorough, resourceful and deeply dedicated to her students. She paid close attention to my strengths and vulnerabilities and expertly adapted her instruction to suit my needs. Tentative at first, I have made clear advances in the fundamentals in my brief intensive period of study. This experience has inspired me to go further. Sono is a gem.”
"I'm so grateful for Sono's drawing classes! She has a gift for bringing out the best in her students and making the learning process so enjoyable. I now see the world through a different lens as I go through it!"
