About Austin Zaff

I am a producer, audio engineer, mixing/mastering engineer, guitar player, singer and songwriter. I have been writing songs for 15 years. I got my Bachelors of Music from the Purchase College Conservatory of Music where I studied studio production as well as music theory, ear-training, music history, composition and film scoring.

I have a deep love of all things music, and I want to help you foster your talents and grow in any aspect of songwriting that you wish to learn. I have a student-led approach to teaching; everyone is unique and I want to help foster your uniqueness, not fit you into a box. I will provide expertise, guidance and knowledge while encouraging you to be yourself and become the best you can be.

About the lesson

I have been dedicated to the craft of songwriting for over 15 years and bring a deep love and passion for songwriting to every lesson. I have been studying songs and honing my abilities for more than half my life, I've taken countless classes and participated in camps and workshops. My goal is to share everything I've learned with you.

I will help build a concrete foundation with a detailed and in-depth look at form, theory, lyrics, melody, harmony and everything else that goes into a song. I will also show you how to break all of the rules to create a new and exciting expression of who you are. We will dive into topics like: how to use momentum to propel a song forward, how to most efficiently use lyrics to convey a deeper message, how to create and subvert expectations and much, much more.

I can also help you learn how to analyze your favorite songs and see what makes them tick and how you can use that knowledge to write your own new favorite song.

Songwriting can feel very vulnerable and exposing at times, I have dealt with this a lot myself. So I always aim to create a safe space for expression without judgement. My only goal is to help you become the writer that you want to be.

Whether you're brand new to songwriting and need help bringing your vision to life, or you are a seasoned writer looking for a fresh perspective or a jumpstart to break-through writers block, I teach any and all levels of experience.
