[COVID-19 UPDATE: Online tutoring works great with me, with adults but also with very small children with whom I can do many games over FaceTime, Zoom or Skype!]
My name is Yasmina, I am from the French-speaking part of Switzerland (it is the exact same French as the one spoken in France), I am half French and I love teaching French!
I have been living in Los Angeles since August 2015 and am a graduate student at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music as a clarinet player (I teach the clarinet too, by the way).
Before moving to the USA, I've lived in Switzerland, in The Netherlands and in Norway, where I learned respectively Dutch and Norwegian. I also learned Latin, Ancient Greek, German and a little bit of Spanish, so I know many learning methods when it comes to languages and love to find connections between different languages to make it easier to remember new words.
I try to prioritize the conversational part of learning as, in my experience with myself and my past students, I know it is a key to free yourself, dare speaking and make mistakes, intuitively integrate the grammar rules, and eventually become more and more fluent. However, if you would like to focus on learning grammar and spelling rules, I can very well teach you that as I have always been a nerd at school when it came to spelling and grammar! ;-)
Also as a professional woodwind player, I am extremely aware of the position of the tongue and the shaping of the mouth, which is essential when you want to achieve the right pronunciation.
You can learn with me to prepare for exams and midterms, or to have only conversations, and you will learn about French and Swiss cultures, and in general European culture. I have a long experience in tutoring children (even very small ones, like 2 years old!), teens and adults, and from beginners to advanced students.
Looking forward to meeting you!!
Experience of over 10 years and an average of 20 students who all saw dramatic improvements in their French writing, understanding and conversational skills. My students who would go to school all received much better grades and, most importantly, started to love French!
My rate varies with travel and may vary also if I have to drive to your house during rush-hour.
Completed high-school in Switzerland 10/10 in languages (French, German, English, Latin, Ancient Greek).
Holds 2 Bachelor’s (from Switzerland and The Netherlands), 1 Master’s (from Norway), and 1 Graduate Certificate and 1 Artist Diploma in Music Performance from the University of Southern California.
I taught myself Dutch and Norwegian. I have tutored others in French, English and German.
Perfect! So patient and supportive!
Perfect! Yasmina has been an excellent tutor! Extremely patient and very thorough. I feel that I've learned a lot in our short time together. I highly recommend her!
Perfect! As a college professor, I am super picky when it comes to learning. I can honestly say that Yasmina is a wonderful French teacher. She is knowledgeable, precise, and patient. I once thought I was hopeless and I would never learn French pronunciation, but Yasmina has helped me get to a point where I feel confident speaking French in public. She is also reliable and honest. I highly recommend French lessons with Yasmina.
Yasimina is a highly effective, yet friendly, French teacher. With me, for example, she focused a lot on the pronunciation of French vowels and consonants (the French “r’”) that are difficult for English speakers.
