About Stephen

I have a Master of Landscape Architecture degree with a focus on ecological restoration and design. I currently work in Montreal and have 10+ years of professional experience working on a wide variety of projects from ecological restoration, commercial and public spaces, and residential gardens. I have a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture and 15+ years of experience working in arboretums, on landscape crews, organic farms, small restoration plant nurseries, and in my own garden.

I have previously been a university professor in Philadelphia and Delaware teaching introductory design, ecological planting design, urban design, public lands, and community planning.

I have also previously owned my own design + build company working largely on residential projects, but also large rural properties and with public schools and organizations.

I am passionate about empowering people with skills and knowledge to design their environments around them to create a holistic relationship and lifestyle with their landscapes. Gardens and outdoor spaces are dynamic, ever evolving systems, and managing them over time is how we create a deeper connection with the natural world.

About the lesson

I teach to all levels from beginners, to more seasoned gardeners and students of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture. My goal is to empower you with knowledge and skills to become the steward of your own landscape.

You will get one on one attention. In the initial 30 minute free session, we can go over your initial questions and create a schedule and curriculum tailored to what and how you want to learn.

Online, we can learn:
-General design theory/concepts, and design process
-Planting Design
-Water management strategies
-Organic Edible Garden planning and management
-Ecological and Sustainable landscape ideas and practice
-Landscape management practices from site preparation to ongoing maintenance
-Technical information and resources
-Other informational topics

In the greater Montreal area, we can meet at your site to review more specific items in the field. This includes reviewing your specific site conditions to help you plan your landscape, or more specific and hands-on horticulture practices.

Tutoring to university students or younger of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture is available as well. We can work one on one, or with a small group of students working together on a project or course.

Details

The initial free session is virtual only.

Site visit sessions may include some design work and/or physical work, but the goal is to teach you, not perform the work for you. Transportation time is included in the fee beyond 20 minutes of travel round trip.

University students or younger may split a full price session among a small group of up to 4 people, or can have a reduced one on one rate of 18$/hour.
