About Josh

About Me

I've been editing for nearly 25 years, starting back in 1998 when I was 10 years old making my own films. I taught myself the software, slowly improving and learning from more experienced filmmakers along the way. Since then, my short films have been broadcast on the BBC and have won awards at film festivals around the world.

I've worked professionally as a freelance editor in corporate, documentary, branded content, promo and behind the scenes short films for a variety of clients, including BBC, ITV, Channel 5 and GSK.

I really enjoy helping people learn editing skills and improve their confidence in a fun, accessible way.

Whether you're just beginning, are intermediate or advanced, I can help you level-up your editing skills. You might want an all-round introduction to Premiere Pro or you could already be an editor with some experience but would like assistance with a specific topic.

Examples of what I've covered with previous students include:

- How to edit videos for your YouTube channel

- How to edit a short film / documentary

- Being a quicker editor

- How to make an existing edit more interesting using advanced techniques

- Best practices for using stock footage, sound effects and music

- 'Fine tuning' picture and audio with colour correction and noise reduction / removal techniques (using Adobe Audition).

Lessons are taught online through Zoom, where there is the option to share computer screens to see the editing timeline.

  • Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

I think my first time using a computer was at school, when the screen was black and the writing was green and binary! Unfortunately it wasn't The Matrix, or was it...?! That and Sonic The Hedgehog, of course - it was the 90s!
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

Probably how much more accessible filmmaking is now. To be honest, it was pretty accessible in the 90s if you had a camcorder and a computer, but since then you can make and edit a film on your phone and share it immediately with the world. The evolution in 25 years is incredible.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

My expertise is in filmmaking and film editing, which is something I've been interested in from the age of around six when I started making films. I've always been a huge film buff. Film editing's importance in the computer world is, I would say, significant. For several reasons. One is communication; increasingly companies communicate using video to market their services and tell stories, just as we do via YouTube, Tik Tok and Instagram. Another is maintaining the human-ness of storytelling. I may be proven wrong on this point, but in a world where so much is automated and performed by computers, I would be surprised if computers could take on the job of visual storytelling. So we'll always need humans to do this, just as the computer world will be enhanced by retaining a human touch.
  • Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

They've certainly achieved important things, but I've always been more inspired by artists and those who are more curious about life's deeper levels. David Bowie, for example, has always been a big role model for me.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In editing, and film storytelling in general, it's essential to remember who your audience is. Who is it for? Is it for you or for the audience? I spent many years being a perfectionist with my edits, taking an incredibly long time before I sent them out into the world. Of course, it's good to take pride in one's work, but the main reason I was being a perfectionist was because I wanted to try and control what my audience thought of the finished film, as if to ensure they would like it. The moment I realised that that isn't possible, that art is subjective, was exactly when my work got better. I was able to answer the question of who the film was for; I wanted it to be for others. Because I think the only time a film truly comes alive is when it is watched by someone else. That is part of the process. So the minute you let go of perfectionism and get your work out there, that's when you can really start learning and improving and having fun!
  • What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?

It certainly can be complicated. There are elements of editing, for example, that can appear initially overwhelming, and sometimes it's as if computers have a mind of their own! However, just like anything that appears complex, it's about breaking it down into manageable chunks until it's easier to understand. Then it can be easy.
  • What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?

As well as a filmmaker and a tutor, I am also a life and wellbeing coach. I'm passionate about helping people feel more fulfilled and grounded in their lives. There are many other passions, mainly to do with getting outdoors and being with people.
  • What makes you a Superprof in IT?

Making many mistakes over the years and learning from them, learning from people more experienced, trying things out, experimenting and a sense of curiosity.
