About Helen

Currently, I am a lead singer ukulele player for the Bend Ukulele Group in my town in Oregon. I have been a part of this large community group of up to 100 uke players at times, for over 12 years now! I also teach children ages 8 and up to play the ukulele at an elementary school after school program. I have been playing the guitar/ukulele since I was a teenager. I also play the banjo and I enjoy playing the drums like the Djembe and Congo's. I also play with a small group of musicians where we have performed for our community at many different events. Music is an integral part of my being and happiness. The ukulele is more then just an instrument.. it can bring a lot of connection and happiness in your life as well. I would like to share it with you!

My formal education and degree lies in the sciences. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Dental Hygiene Sciences, Licensed in Oral Anesthesia. I am also a Certified Functional Nutritionist, and pursuing a Doctorate Ph.D in Traditional Naturopathy. My hobbies and love are definitely music as well as being a metal smith jewelry artist. Www. We are capable of learning so many things at all ages and this keeps us alive. I encourage you to do what you love! I am now at the age where I feel grateful for doing the thing I love MOST and that is sharing and making music with my friends!

About the lesson

My passion is to teach people how to use the ukulele as a music therapy tool. Ukulele is an easy instrument that can bring so much joy and release of emotional pain as well. I will teach you how to use this amazing instrument to create music and to sing and to use it to find connection in your community.

Lessons include learning chords, how to create and feel rhythm, sing and play, advance up the neck, and learn to jam in a group. Every person is in a different place with their learning journey and I strive to connect with you where your level is.

Did you know that singing and humming can stimulate your parasympathetic nervous system? It can help balance and exercise your mental health by creating harmony, peace and joy within. It keeps your mind stimulated and distracted with a focus on energy. Also, singing and playing an instrument at the same time exercises all four quadrants of the physical mind. These are good cognitive skills for keeping your brain exercised for learning at all stages in life. I have worked with children all the way up to elderly populations with music.

My ultimate purpose is to give my students the foundation of musical skills so you can grow on to continue using and understanding how music can affect your daily life with an instrument such as the ukulele.
