About Connor

I am qualified and experienced in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) and Linguistics. Having both formal training and understanding of language acquisition. I won't just teach you what to say, I will help you build the confidence to use the language.

To truly master a language, you have to live it. But that doesn't mean you have to live in the country where it is spoken. However, for me, I had to live there to learn and exceed my own limits. I spent the last four and a half years living, working and building a community in which I belonged in Japan. I have immersed myself in the culture, daily life, local communities.

Because I had to learn Japanese as an adult myself, I know exactly where native English speakers stumble. I understand the frustration of tricky rules, kanji, and the gap between formal speech and casual Japanese used on the streets of Tokyo.

Why learn Japanese with me?

Learning from native speakers can sometimes be intimidating and they may struggle to break down language patterns into manageable steps. I will act as your practical and communicative bridge:

No Dry Lectures: We won't waste time on grammar charts, learning the nuances or background of grammar items. We will focus on active communication and language patterns.

Empathetic Coaching: I have been in your exact shoes, I know the fast tracks to functional communication and the textbook traps that waste your time.

Real-World Focus: My time in Japan means I teach you practical, conversational language alongside your essential input.

About the lesson

As a qualified and experienced EFL teacher, I do not make you memorise boring grammar lists, or repeat stiff textbook dialogues to the T.

While textbook input is important for building grammar foundations, learners often get stuck in rigid, unnatural phrasing because they are focused on explicit instruction. Instead, I take those structural foundations, strip away the parts that are unnecessary and ad-lib them to show you how casual, modern Japanese is actually spoken.

Having lived in Japan for 4.5 years, I have known the struggles that come with acquiring Japanese, I have learnt what good materials and bad materials look like. I will help you to acquire spoken ability to the best of my abilities.

Who do I teach?

I specialise in turning self-conscious students into confident, functional speakers. My lessons are ideal for;

Complete Beginners: Build a solid Foundation (Hiragana, Katakana, basic structure).

Travel & Relocation Prep: Master essential, practical tasks like ordering food, navigating trains, or asking for help.

Intermediate Conversationalists (Up to Lower Intermediate):
Break through the plateau, master tricky everyday grammar, transition from stiff textbook phrasing into natural, casual Japanese.

Please note: I do not cater to upper intermediate to advanced learners currently. However, I can recommend materials upon request.
