About Helena Lucía

I'm Colombian, born in Bogotá, and I moved back here after several years living and working in London. I studied Tourism and Hotel Management and spent most of my career in hotel sales and travel, which means I've spent a lot of time explaining things clearly to people who don't share my first language, and a lot of time listening. I started teaching Spanish online in 2020 and found I enjoyed it more than anything I'd done before.

I'm patient, organized, and I like my students to feel they can make mistakes without embarrassment. Outside class I'm happiest cooking, traveling around Colombia and walking my dog.

English

I'm a native Spanish speaker from Colombia, and I teach online from Bogotá, which is on US Eastern Time, so evening and weekend slots that work for you also work for me.

I've been teaching Spanish online since 2020, mostly to adults in the UK and the US who want to actually speak, not just pass a test. Before that I spent over twelve years working in hotels and tourism in Colombia and London (Hyatt, Wyndham, Aviatur), so my lessons are built around real situations: ordering food, checking into a hotel, getting a taxi, talking with locals, handling a work call in Spanish.

What a typical lesson looks like: we talk from the first minute, at your level. I correct gently, note the mistakes that matter, and send you a short summary after each class with the vocabulary and expressions we used so you can review in five minutes. Grammar comes in when you need it to say something, not as a list to memorize.

Who I work with: complete beginners who want a calm start, intermediate learners stuck at "I understand but I can't speak", travelers preparing a trip to Colombia, Mexico or anywhere in Latin America, and professionals who need Spanish for work or for Spanish-speaking colleagues and clients.

Lessons are on Zoom or Google Meet, 60 minutes (30 or 45 available if you prefer shorter, more frequent sessions). The first lesson is free: we meet, I assess your level, and you tell me what you want to be able to do in Spanish. Then we plan from there.

Message me and we'll find a time this week.
