About Michael Ewen

I studied Popular Music in Music College in England in the 90's, I traveled as a session musician with multiple bands in Britain, throughout Siberia, Guatemala, Mexico, and throughout the United States. I taught guitar when I first moved to Massachusetts, mostly to high school students, then stopped when I had children and started working a regular job. I have got back into teaching, writing and playing the past few years and due to some physical ailments stemming from a bad car accident years ago, I am no longer working a full time job, so I can focus on Music.

I play Fingerstyle Guitar and Bass. I enjoy teaching students at all levels, but I specialize in helping those who want to learn to or improve on Writing Music or creating original arrangements of classics.

After my accident, I had some cognitive struggles so over the years, I boiled music theory down to 3 simple Crib sheets or Hacks, allowing those who are either too busy to study music theory too deeply, or perhaps have learning difficulties, or cognitive issues, to play by ear. I train their aural perception with simple, fun exercises allowing students to play songs without having to learn them in advance, to write in real time and to jam with other musicians. Taking away the frustration those with learning difficulties or TBI's etc feel while trying to create, increases self confidence and self esteem which in turn, produces "better music".

This system also greatly improves the quality of life for those with emotional issues such as depression and anxiety because I encourage students to practice chord changes and picking patterns by writing music. Improving technique is all about reps, but drilling requires discipline which is almost always based on one's emotional state. Practicing your own creation is self fulfilling as the emotional reward received from someone being impressed with your own art is so much stronger than just learning Twinkle Twinkle Little Star etc.. For this reason, learning through writing leads to longer term students because the writing is the motivation and therefore is not dependent on discipline or overall positive emotional state. Artists want their art to be the best it can be, no matter how they feel, or how stressed they are. For the past few years, most of the world has been more stressed than they have ever been, and a lot of hobbies and pastimes have fallen out of favor. Creating Music is the best therapy.

I create custom lessons and play along YouTube videos and playlists based on our favorite songs. Also use fun, easy techniques to train your ear allowing you to play your favorite songs without written music, ands also write your own tunes.
