About Mariko

Hello, I’m Mariko Okubo, a ceramic artist based in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, Japan, where I run my studio, Green Time.

I discovered ceramics in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2011. After returning to Japan in 2016, I established my studio in Kyoto. Through figures, flowers, and small animals, I express invisible emotions, memories, love, and prayers in clay.

I have exhibited and participated in artist residencies and international ceramics symposiums in Japan, Taiwan, China, South Korea, the United States, and Turkey. In 2026, I created and installed three sculptures of children during the International Eskişehir Terracotta Symposium in Turkey.

Alongside teaching at my studio, I have led ceramics workshops at department stores and Rokko Silent Resort in Japan. I have also held more than ten workshops in Taiwan. In 2025, I taught a figurative sculpture workshop at Taoxichuan Art Center in Jingdezhen, China, focusing on upper-body forms, faces, and expressions.

I value each student’s creative ideas. Through demonstrations and practical guidance, I help you develop your skills and bring your own personality and expression into your work. Beginners to sculpting figures or flowers are welcome.

Lessons are available in Japanese or English. If you would like support in Chinese, I can teach mainly in English, using simple Chinese and demonstrations to help explain.

Would you like to create lovely flowers or small, expressive faces in clay?

These private, one-to-one lessons let you explore a subject of your choice, including flowers, faces and expressions, or small animals. If you have experience making pottery but are new to sculpting figures or flowers, you are very welcome.

I demonstrate with the camera focused on my hands, observe your work, and guide you at your own pace. You will learn practical techniques for shaping, proportion, joining, and finishing that you can apply to your own creations.

WHAT YOU CAN LEARN

• Flowers: shaping petals by hand, adjusting their thickness and curves, and assembling and joining them.
• Cute faces and expressions: facial proportions, shaping the eyes, nose, and mouth, and refining the cheeks and mouth area.
• Small animals: building basic forms and expressing movement and personality.
• Figurative sculpture: projects such as slab-built busts, developed over several lessons.
• Creative guidance: practical advice based on your work in progress or sketches.

When booking, please tell me about your ceramics experience and what you would like to learn. The time needed varies by project, so we will discuss a suitable lesson plan beforehand.

ONLINE LESSONS

Please prepare your own ceramic clay and tools. If you wish to fire your work, please arrange access to a kiln or firing service and confirm their clay and size requirements in advance. Materials delivery and firing services are not included.

Positioning your camera so I can see your hands and work will help me offer more specific guidance.

IN-PERSON STUDIO LESSONS

Private lessons are available at my studio in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, Japan, with a minimum booking of two hours. Clay and tools are provided. Beginners to ceramics are also welcome to enquire.

LESSON LANGUAGES

Lessons are available in Japanese or English. If you would like support in Chinese, lessons will be conducted mainly in English, with simple Chinese and demonstrations as needed.

The initial free 30-minute session is a consultation to discuss your goals, experience, and preparation. It does not include hands-on instruction.
