TEACHING TAGALOG LANGUAGE: BASIC TO ADVANCED LEARNING
As a native Tagalog speaker, NCCA facilitator, and stage director/actor with over 20 years of experience, I bring a dynamic, immersive, and culturally rooted approach to teaching Tagalog- combining conversational practice, cultural immersion, and performance-based techniques to make learning natural, engaging, and effective.
MY TEACHING METHOD AND TECHNIQUES
I use a communicative and immersive approach, prioritizing real-life conversation from day one. Students learn Tagalog in context - through dialogues, storytelling, role-playing, and cultural scenarios - not isolated words. As a stage director and actor, I incorporate performance techniques like voice modulation, improvisation, and expressive delivery to build confidence and fluency. I may also integrate Filipino-rich cultural materials - folk tales, traditional songs, and local expressions - so students don't just learn the language but understand the heart of Filipino culture.
A TYPICAL LESSON PLAN
Each session follows a structured yet flexible flow:
1. Warm-up (5–10 mins): Conversational practice using previously learned phrases.
2. Vocabulary and Grammar Focus (15 mins): New words and sentence structures introduced through real-life examples.
3. Guided Practice (15 mins): Role-playing, dialogue exercises, and situational conversations.
4. Cultural Insight (5–10 mins): A brief discussion of Filipino customs, idioms, or expressions related to the lesson.
5. Wrap-up and Assignment (5 mins): Recap, Q&A, and practical take-home exercises.
WHAT SETS ME APART AS A TUTOR
My 20+ years as a stage director and actor give me a unique edge - I teach Tagalog as a living, breathing art form, not just a subject. My facilitation experience ensures that lessons are culturally authentic and grounded in Filipino heritage. I create a safe, encouraging space where mistakes are part of the learning process, and every student is empowered to speak with confidence.
WHO THE LESSONS ARE FOR
My lessons are designed for:
Beginners (Basic): No prior knowledge - learn pronunciation, greetings, and everyday phrases.
Intermediate Learners: Build grammar, expand vocabulary, and hold conversations.
Advanced Students: Master idioms, formal speech, storytelling, and cultural nuances.
Specific Groups: Foreigners, Filipino descendants (Balikbayan), professionals, artists, and anyone passionate about Filipino language and culture.
Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your fluency, my classes meet you where you are and take you further - with authenticity, artistry, and heart.
