About Kit

I have had a deep personal connection to the violin as long as I can remember. I began studying at 6 years of age learning classical music through my High School years, where I was concertmaster of my award-winning school orchestra. I began listening to jazz in high school and eventually learned improvisation in jazz and American fiddle music. After college I played with a rock and country rock band, touring for 3 years before going back and getting formal training as a jazz musician. I then became an elementary music teacher, after an ear training program in college convinced me that early ear training is the key to developing musical intelligence. I used that experience to develop a beginning violin program using ear training as a key part of my teaching. In recent years I have played professionally with a number of well-known jazz musicians in Canada and the US, and am deeply focused now on developing intuitive improvisational techniques.

About the lesson

* Experience teaching all levels - beginners to advanced and all styles - classical, fiddle styles and especially, jazz. * Learn by ear and/or through written music. I always begin with music to which the student has a personal connection. * My teaching is experientially based - meaning all study focuses on real music. Any exercises, scales etc. develop from the repertoire being learned. * I teach all levels - from beginning violin to upper intermediate levels of classical and fiddle music, AND all levels up to and including master players in jazz and improvisation.
