About Xiaoya
I offer relaxed, hands-on cooking and pastry lessons in London, focused on Chinese Southern home cooking, dim sum, cake decoration, and Japano-French patisserie.
My teaching is practical and home-kitchen oriented, helping you build confidence through clear techniques, flavour understanding, and attention to detail. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those refining existing skills.
I studied History (BA) and Sociology & International Politics (MA) at the University of Leeds, followed by five years of full-time experience in London kitchens.
My experience includes 1 year as Demi Chef de Partie in a Michelin-level Japano-French pastry kitchen, 2 years in a Hainanese fusion restaurant influenced by Southern Chinese coastal cuisine, and 2 years of private dessert catering for events and clients.
I’m interested in food as something connected to memory, culture, and everyday life, and I enjoy translating traditional dishes into simpler, more accessible home versions without losing their essence.
Lessons are calm, step-by-step, and adapted to your pace, helping you build confidence naturally in the kitchen.
My aim is to help you enjoy cooking, feel at ease in the kitchen, and understand the cultural stories behind everyday food.

My teaching style is structured but still very relaxed. I like to keep things practical and easy to follow, so I usually prepare simple notes or visual guides before class, and sometimes slides if they help. Each lesson is planned, but I always adjust depending on your pace, questions, or what you want to focus on that day.
Lessons are usually 1.5 to 3 hours long, depending on what we’re cooking. There’s always a mix of demonstration, hands-on cooking, and feedback, so you’re actively doing things rather than just watching.
I’ve done around 500 hours of private tutoring, working with individuals and small groups. Over time, I’ve learnt to keep things calm and step-by-step, helping people build confidence without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
I work with complete beginners all the way to more experienced home cooks, and also with adults or families who want to learn together. I always adjust the level so it feels comfortable but still useful.
In general, I just want lessons to feel clear, relaxed, and enjoyable—so you actually leave feeling like you can repeat everything at home.
