I am a huge proponent of understanding the background information in order to move forward with new information. I believe without the "big picture", learning new information can be frustrating and near impossible. I have always assisted and taught students in a reverse pyramid style, where we start broad and understand the big picture/why we are learning it, and then move down until the individual problem or topic is pinpointed and addressed. This method allows students to see the big picture and move laterally within a topic, which can really assist when it comes to tests as they most often ask big picture or "how is this related?" questions.
