Learning Algebra as a beginner can seem a bit intimidating, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really not that hard! You just have to make sure you follow the order for completing an equation and keep your work organized to avoid any mistakes. So the best place to start is by learning basic Algebra rules. Review the basic skills such as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing, because we all need a refresher from time to time to give ourselves the opportunity to excel. After you perfect the basics, move on to PEMDAS meaning Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. The order of operations is the most important rule in Algebra since the wrong order can sometimes affect the answer. Then move on to using the negative numbers, and the rules that come with them such as “two negative signs cancel out” and so on. Lastly, know how to keep long problems organized in order to avoid errors, especially when dealing with two-sided equations.

There really isn’t a perfect age for when one should start studying Algebra, but it’s usually introduced in 8th grade or 9th grade. At that point, students are the age of fourteen, fifteen, or sixteen, but other students might even be ready for it at a younger age. It depends on the teaching approach and academic maturity since students can start as young as five years old. However, don’t feel discouraged if you’re a lot older for there is no better time to learn than the present. What matters the most is that you stay motivated and consistent when it comes to learning a new subject. Math will essentially help strengthen your reasoning skills and critical thinking, so it will also have a positive effect on your everyday life. Sometimes it’s suggested for kids to be introduced to these types of subjects at an early age simply because they are more likely to retain the information. Similar to why it’s beneficial for kids to be introduced to different languages when they are small rather than in adulthood.

There are four basic algebraic operations which are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
By learning and remembering the functions of these four basic operations, you will be able to solve problems successfully. Although they may be very beginner-level rules, it’s a great place to start and set yourself up for a successful journey with studying mathematics!
