Understanding the 3-fret rule is a key step toward clean, efficient bass playing.

• One finger per fret: assign each left-hand finger to cover one fret in a 3-fret span, so your index finger handles fret 1, your middle fret 2, your ring finger fret 3.
• Left-hand efficiency: this rule reduces unnecessary finger movement and prevents tension in the hand.
• Proper thumb placement: keep your thumb behind the middle finger on the back of the neck to support the 3-fret span.
• When to shift positions: position shifts let you cover the entire fretboard cleanly while keeping the 3-fret rule intact in each new zone.

A private tutor can check your hand position from the start and help you apply the 3-fret rule correctly.

The average cost of bass guitar lessons in Vancouver is around $44/h.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• The level of study and your learning goals
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The number of hours booked per month
• The teaching mode (in-person or video call)

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their teaching style before committing.

Getting good at bass requires a balanced approach covering posture, rhythm, and fretboard knowledge.

• Start with proper posture and technique: correct hand position, a relaxed grip, and good posture prevent injury and accelerate progress.
• Learn to read tabs and bass clef notation: tabs are a fast way to start playing songs, while reading music opens up a much wider repertoire.
• Focus on rhythm and groove: the bass guitar's main role is rhythmic — practice with a metronome or drum track to develop a steady pulse.
• Study scales, patterns, and the fretboard: fretboard knowledge lets you understand why things sound good and move freely across all positions.

A private instructor adapts each lesson to your style and goals, whether you want to play rock, jazz, or funk.
