If you have a passion for Chess or have an interest in learning to play yourself then look no further than your own city! Salt Lake City actually has a club dedicated to all things chess where locals gather to play against each other and even learn the game. Whether you’re looking for opponents or fellow hobbyists, Salt Lake City Chess Players is ready to welcome you with open arms and help you get started! The best part is that they offer both online and in-person options for all of their members; however, if you’re still not convinced you can also learn through Superprof. Here at Superprof, we offer potential Chess students like you the opportunity to find your personal online or in-person tutor that is also Salt Like City-based. There are even some instructors that offer their first Chess lesson for free to see if they are the right fit for you, so don’t feel discouraged from taking on this new hobby. As they say, there’s no better time to try something new than the present! Who knows maybe one day you’ll be the one teaching and coaching others how to play the wonderful game of Chess.
Now let’s start with the basics, which is learning the most important rule when it comes to playing Chess. Although, some people may have different versions of what is considered the “golden rule”, here is what we have to say: The King is the most important piece of the game. And a great rule is to always defend your most important piece (the King) with the same amount of pieces that are attacking it. Or at least try your best to, again all great players need practice to perfect their Chess skills. So if your opponent attacks one of your pieces, count the number of your pieces that defend it right away to make sure it will stay safe. And you may be wondering, why the King? Well, the King cannot be taken off the board, and the goal of the game is to capture your opponent’s King. So obviously keeping yours safe is a great way to ensure you win the game! Chess games can be won and lost with a single stroke, which is why you need to be super attentive to everything that is happening in front of you.
A Chess Trainer can be any program, webpage, or method one can use to train and practice one’s skills. Or it can literally be a real person that is going to help you learn the ins and outs of the game and help you develop the skills to become a great player. Regardless of the one you choose, a good trainer will help you with tactics, strategy, positional understanding, calculation, protection, and so on. Most of the time they are also referred to as a “Chess Coach” since they are coaching you through the process of the game as you play. Having a Coach is definitely worth it because you have someone whose goal is to help you better understand the positions and how to make better plays on your own. When you have a clear understanding of every move, you are more likely to win more games since you are already one step ahead of your opponent. This game takes a lot of brain power because not only do you have to outsmart your opponent, but you also have to get in their mind. When you are able to see all the possibilities, you are more likely to eliminate the moves that won’t work in your favor. It sounds overwhelming, but once you start you’ll be hooked!
As previously mentioned, once you perfect the game yourself you could one day help others learn Chess too! Not only will you continue to become a better player, but you also keep the spirit of the game of Chess alive. The first step in preparing to become a Coach is by becoming a good chess player yourself. It’s recommended for one to reach a 1600 rating before starting to Coach other students, and it will also build up your credibility. Having general knowledge about Chess is also important because knowing the “theory” and history of the game is what makes the journey special. This way you’ll be able to educate your students and introduce them to frequent openings and strategic themes. Lastly, have experience teaching others, so you can start by teaching your family members or friends how to play. This is a good way to practice your communication skills as a tutor, and also allows you to see how students react to your methods. At the end of the day, it’s through daily practice that you’ll figure out if Chess and Coaching are truly meant for you!

I started lessons with Nart a couple months back when I was looking to get serious about improving. He takes the time to review my games in detail and shows me exactly where I can do better without overwhelming me with too much information at once....
