Chess rests on a handful of core rules and principles that, once understood, open the door to deep strategy.

• The pieces and their moves: Each side has 16 pieces — one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns, each moving in a unique way.
• Check and checkmate: Check means your king is threatened — you must resolve it immediately by moving the king, blocking, or capturing the attacker.
• Special moves: Castling lets the king move two squares toward a rook for safety, en passant is a special pawn capture, and promotion turns a pawn that reaches the far rank into any piece (usually a queen).
• Opening principles: Avoid moving the same piece twice in the opening, don't bring your queen out too early, and castle within the first 10 moves.

With these fundamentals in place, chess becomes a rich game of planning, calculation, and creativity.
