In drumming, the 80/20 rule points to the handful of fundamentals that produce the biggest results.

• Rudiments: basic patterns such as single strokes and paradiddles appear again and again once you start playing real songs.
• Timing: solid internal timekeeping affects every groove, fill, and song you'll ever play.
• Groove: mastering a small set of go-to beats lets you play along with most songs you'll hear.
• Control: playing cleanly at different volumes shapes how a beat actually feels.

With a private tutor, you skip wasted practice time and progress faster on the kit.

The going rate for drum tutoring in East Lansing averages $34/h.

The cost depends on:

• The instructor's credentials and track record
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• Where the sessions take place

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

Getting better at drums works best with short, focused sessions done regularly.

• Beginners: aim for 20-30 focused minutes rather than long, unstructured sessions.
• Intermediate and advanced players: 45-60 minutes covers warmups, rudiments, and repertoire work.
• Structure: balancing rudiments, timing drills, and playing along with music covers all the bases.
• Consistency: daily short sessions beat occasional long ones for building muscle memory.

With a private drum coach, you avoid wasted repetition and progress steadily week to week.
