In drumming, the 80/20 rule points to the handful of fundamentals that produce the biggest results.

• Rudiments: a handful of patterns, including single strokes and paradiddles, form the base of nearly everything you'll play.
• Timing: solid internal timekeeping affects every groove, fill, and song you'll ever play.
• Groove: a few core beats cover the vast majority of songs across genres.
• Control: playing cleanly at different volumes shapes how a beat actually feels.

A qualified instructor spots the core skills worth prioritizing and builds a plan around them.

In Greenwich, expect to pay about $80/h for a drum lesson.

The cost depends on:

• The level of study (primary, secondary, university)
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• The lesson format (online, at home, at the tutor's)

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

Getting better at drums works best with short, focused sessions done regularly.

• Beginners: short 20-30 minute sessions keep motivation high and prevent bad habits.
• Intermediate and advanced players: 45-60 minutes covers warmups, rudiments, and repertoire work.
• Structure: a solid session includes warmups, rudiments, timing exercises, and a song or groove.
• Consistency: daily short sessions beat occasional long ones for building muscle memory.

An experienced instructor adjusts your routine as your timing and coordination improve.
