Do your feet always tap with the beats of a song? Do you groove with the rhythm whenever music is playing? Well, it probably comes as no surprise, but if you’ve been thinking about learning to play a musical instrument, you might want to consider a percussion instrument.
Some people think drums are nothing but loud and boisterous, often associated with marching bands and rock n roll. But there is so much more to playing drums than just banging a drum with sticks.
So why not explore the fascinating world of percussion and learn to play the drums?
With Superprof, connecting with professionals in Nashville has never been easier and more fun!
Take drumming lessons with the best of the best and discover your drumming potential today!
Depending on whether your first drum lessons are in a music or drum school or your drum teacher is tutoring you at home, you can find yourself without a drum to play on if you don’t buy your own.
Music schools often have some form of a drum set for beginner students; some Superprof tutors who teach from home will usually have a set of drums available for students.
This is fine for learning the rudiments of drumming and finding out if drum playing is really for you without the expense of investing in your own set of drums.
However, if you do wish to pursue a lifelong passion for drumming, you will need to practice at home, even as a beginner - and that means buying drums.
Whether you are learning jazz drumming or practicing your rock drum solo, you need the right feedback under your drumsticks to improve your drum play. And that means investing in a drum set.
Once you’ve found the right tutor match with Superprof, this is an area of expertise that they can certainly guide you!
The drums, cymbals, and sticks themselves are obviously not skills, but managing your gear is. This includes choosing the right tools and how to take care of them.
The drums are the easy part. You don’t need brand new drums or the top of the line to sound great. As long as the shells and rims are in good shape, you can put new heads on them and tune the drum to a desirable sound.
For beginners, the type of cymbal is more important than the quality. As long as you have a set of hi-hats and a ride cymbal, you’ll be set to work on the drumming basics for your Superprof lessons.
Drum sticks are a whole other issue. You don’t want to play with just any sticks. Used sticks lack balance and can affect the feedback from the drum if they are broken in any way. So buy new sticks that are comfortable for and fit the application.
Different applications of drum sticks can include the differences between playing a drum set or just a snare drum. Snare drum sticks generally have a round tip to produce precise attacks on the drum and tend to be thicker than drum set sticks.
Drum set sticks attempt to accommodate the needs of a cymbal — providing more surface area on the tip for attack — and the roundness needed for playing drums. This is often achieved through an acorn-shaped tip.
Popular brands like Vater, Promark, and Vic Firth are household names for professional drummers.
The first one is stamping on the Bass Drum Pedal.
This is a classic mistake made by most students when they start incorporating the bass drum into their grooves.
The control required to operate a bass drum pedal is unlike any movement that we commonly make outside of drumming, and the most natural movement most beginners find is to take their entire foot off the pedal by about 20 centimeters before smashing it down on the pedal with an unnecessary amount of force--producing a harsh, dead thump.
This mistake, however, is an easy one to fix. Ensure that some part of your foot is in contact with the bass drum pedal at all times. There are 2 main techniques for doing this and each comes with its own benefits and hindrances.
The second one is having the heal down and the heal up.
The heel-down technique will generally produce a quieter sound but will permit greater control and intricacy at lower volumes while the heel-up technique is more suited to louder musical styles such as rock, or larger venues where the bass drum needs to carry further.
Distinguishing the difference is a common mistake learning drummers make.
The third one is practicing without a metronome.
There is a common misconception that having a steady pulse and solid sense of time is something that’s innate and can’t be taught. This is not true, and while some people do have a more natural sense of pulse than others, time is something that everybody should devote a large portion of time to practicing.
Maybe you have heard orchestral or marching bands. Maybe you want to sound a bit rockier. If jazz, pop, reggae, afro, or any other music style is your thing, then we are going to help you find the best drum lessons in Nashville and surrounding areas to get you in the music industry.
