Find private flute lessons in Queens

Lip placement on the flute — called the embouchure — is one of the first fundamentals you need to get right.

• Lip contact: your lower lip rests lightly against the edge of the embouchure hole — your lips do not wrap around or go inside the flute.
• Firmness: the corners of the lips stay slightly engaged — not tight — to keep the airstream focused and steady.
• Airstream direction: aim roughly 60% of your air across the hole and into the flute to create a resonant tone.
• Relaxed contact: squeezing or pressing the lips reduces resonance — a light, natural touch produces the best sound.

These fundamentals become second nature quickly — especially with personalized guidance from an experienced instructor.

Flute tutors in Queens typically charge $66/h per hour.

Several factors influence the price:

• The level of study (elementary school, high school, or adult learner)
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The package you choose (one-off trial or regular weekly sessions)
• Whether sessions take place locally or remotely

Online lessons are often more affordable while remaining highly effective.

Yes, you can make real progress teaching yourself the flute — but there are important things to know before you start.

• Getting your first sound: producing a tone on the flute headjoint alone before adding the body is the standard first step for self-learners and students alike.
• Online lessons: video tutorials designed for flute beginners cover breathing, posture, and note reading in a logical, step-by-step order.
• Common self-teaching pitfalls: bad posture, tension in the hands, and incorrect embouchure are the habits most often picked up without supervision.
• Occasional check-ins: scheduling a lesson every few weeks with an experienced flute teacher helps you course-correct before bad habits become fixed.

A private flute teacher can give you the personalized correction that no video or app can replicate.
