The basics of Portuguese vocabulary rest on a few simple word groups.

• Everyday greetings such as bom dia and obrigado, among the first words any learner picks up.
• Simple counting and time vocabulary, applied in everyday situations right away.
• High-frequency verbs such as ser, estar, and ter, the backbone of basic sentences.
• Essential question words such as onde and como, needed to ask for information.

A Portuguese teacher can build your confidence with these words through guided practice.
