Let a private rock guitar teacher broaden your horizons and help you explore the ins and outs of rock guitar

Is it easy to learn Rock guitar?

Well, it depends. Learning to play guitar has one can say a general technique, for example learning the basic chord shapes, learning the basics scales, or learning how to arpeggiate a chord.

Then you can learn how to play with a pick or how to play finger-style. You can learn how to play phrases based on the pentatonic, - usually referred to as licks - or you can learn how to bend and slide, hammer-on or pull-off a note. These are all basic techniques to learn and you find them in most of the guitar styles.

But when it comes to Rock guitar there is a certain background of fast solos and shredding as well as fast riffs and more advanced techniques that go beyond playing a single scale or strumming a progression of chords.

This is why it depends on the guitarist and the group that you would like to learn. For example, learning an Arctic Monkeys song will be easier than learning a Steve Vai or a Van Hallen song. Learning a Black Sabbath song might be easier than learning a Jimmy Hendrix song, but it will also depend on the Black Sabbath song you have chosen.

The best way to know what level you are at and what song would be a good fit for you is to have the guidance of a private guitar instructor. A guitar instructor can assess your technique and level and make a plan of different songs that you want to learn but arrange them so they become progressively more difficult.

What is the best way to learn Rock guitar?

Learning Rock is learning a style in which most of the solos from the genre are based on Blues and Rock & Roll licks. So one could say that the best way to learn Rock guitar is to learn Blues and Rock & Roll.

But this is not necessarily true.

Today there are many active Rock bands and by now we have a large catalog of Rock bands that made their mark in Rock history. And because of this, there are many different levels of songs that you can learn, regardless of their style, their year, etc.

For example, a good way to start learning more complicated riffs could be learning Led Zeppelin’s Black Dog or The Ocean or Moby Dick. But if you don’t like Led Zeppelin, there might be a chance you like Nirvana, and that might be a good way to learn rhythmic riffs. If not Nirvana, then Guns n Roses or Aerosmith.

If you are interested in solos, you can start with Black Sabbath or Led Zeppelin. If you are already good at soloing, then you can try Jimmy Hendrix, Joe Satriani or Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Rock guitar is a vast style with plenty of music to explore. But figuring out the way can be hard. This is why learning with a teacher helps and allows you to progress faster and more efficiently.

How long does it take to learn Rock guitar?

There is no real answer to this question. But if you are learning Rock guitar with a private Rock guitar instructor, then being able to play a song with its corresponding solo could take from 3 months to 6 months if you are a complete beginner and as we mentioned before, if the song is an easy Rock song to learn.

The important thing is to enjoy the process and to keep being motivated. A private guitar teacher can help you with that. One of the benefits of learning with a teacher is that it will give you a sense of consistency and structure to your practice. This helps us stay motivated, progress faster and rock!
