The best way to avoid falling backward is by developing the right skills to keep your balance and there are several things you can do.
First, we suggest practicing your posture by keeping your feet at shoulder length, bending your knees, and slightly learning forward.
This will keep you from falling over!
You can also try “walking like a duck” which is done by pointing your toes out and slowly taking steps forward in order to learn how to move quickly in skates.
Learning how to glide is also a great way to avoid falling back because you learn how to push off one foot and glide with the other.
This helps with moving quickly as well and taking longer strides forward.Â
Lastly, you can learn how to brake properly by placing your right skate slightly in front of the left skate.
Then lift the toe of the right skate and press down hard on the toe, so the harder you press the faster you’ll stop!
The best way to gain confidence in skates is by practicing every chance you get!
The more you practice falling the less fear you’ll have and actually start working on gliding and walking.
By practicing how to fall you’ll also strengthen your joints and bones as your body adapts to the new kinds of impacts that come with roller skating.
