Sewing can seem like a hobby for someone like your grandma but sewing has become a fairly sought-after hobby nowadays. Sewing comes with a lot of perks, making your own clothes from scratch one of them. Other perks to learning to sew include being able to choose your own fabrics, adjusting the measurements to fit your body perfectly, and knowing how to make alterations for clothes that maybe don’t fit any longer.
Now that you’ve learned a few of the many perks of sewing it is time to put together your first sewing kit. A sewing kit needs more than just a needle and thread to start, but those are a great start. A few essentials to get started including the following, but not limited to.
Seam rippers – now you might be wondering what these are, but these little tools are an amazing tool for when you’re a novice sewer to a professional. A seam ripper allows you to undo any errors in your stitching by unpicking threads,
A good pair of scissors is another fundamental tool in every sewer’s kit. Fabric scissors are made like no other, as they are sharper than traditional scissors and allow you to cut through even the toughest fabrics. Fabric scissors come in many styles including pairs that lay flat on a cutting surface while you’re cutting away. Another pair of scissors that are necessary for every sewing kit is a pair of pinking scissors. Pinking scissors are made of saw-toothed blades that cut fabrics in a stylish zig-zagged line. When cutting fabrics with unfinished edges you do not want a straight line as it can cause a lot of fabric fraying. Using a pinking scissor will cut fabrics with zig-zagged edges that will prevent any fabric from fraying.
Measuring tape is a must tool for all sewers at every level of sewing. Measuring your fabrics is one of the most important aspects of sewing and ensures the success of your project. A rule of thumb for all sewers is to always measure twice and only cut once. Chalk or washable markers are the next tools after your measuring tape. Chalk allows you to mark your fabric at key measurements or when mapping sewing lines. Investing in chalk or washable markers are ideal as they won’t ruin your beautiful fabric.
Lastly, a needle threader will be your best friend. This little metal tool can seem useless, but it will very easily become your favorite tool in your sewing kit. The anxiety of getting a thread through a needle loop will be immediately gone when using this small gadget.
Having your reliable sewing kit set, you can now start by getting to know a few fundamental hand-sewing stitches. Hand stitching is beneficial for many reasons including adding a stylistic touch and mending a seam with a quick stitch. These common stitches can relieve you from pulling out your large sewing machine and allow you to fix a myriad of projects.
The ladder stitch is perfect for closing two pieces of fabric together in a seamless and invisible finish. Using a thread that matches the color of the fabric you are mending will make your stitch even more invisible. A ladder stitch follows two pieces of fabric folds and forms a ladder effect that is hidden in each fold and not visible to the eye.
A running stitch is probably the most commonly used stitch. The running stitch is what you will normally use to sew a basic seam and also used to hold to pieces of fabric temporarily. When needed a stronger seam shorter stitches are needed, and longer stitches will make the stitch weaker.
Catch stitching is intended to be visible and gives your project a bit of flare. This stitch is usually used in hems and gives the hem a stronger give. This stitch is also great when working with circular items like a skirt, sleeve, or round tablecloth. A catch stitching looks like a never-ending crisscross effect to the thread.
Finally, a blanket stitch is another very commonly used stitch used as a hemstitch as well. Ideally used at the hem of blankets hence its name. This stitch a decorative way to join fabrics together, while also having a stronghold. This stitch is ideally sown to be seen, so the use of contrasting thread that goes well with the project is always the most ideal.Â

If you are a beginner in sewing machines, then classes at Joann’s or Hobby Lobby are a great option. Hobby Lobby offers a beginners sewing-machine mastery class every month at a very low rate, although sewing machines, fabric, thread, and needles are not included. The class promises to leave you with the knowledge and confidence to start your first sewing machine project.

With two locations in San Antonio both in Culebra and Thousand Oaks, Abby’s Attic offers sewing classes at every level and at every age. From after school classes for kids at every age to adult sewing courses that teach anything from sewing baby clothes to basic garment construction.
Learning sewing fundamentals is also easy by taking a class at a local San Antonio Alamo Community College. Alamo Colleges offer courses from sewing basics to certificate programs in clothing construction. This is a great option if you are interested in turning a sewing hobby into a full-time career. The certificate program is a great path to earning a mastery and perfecting the craft of the needle and thread.
Yet if in-person courses are not ideal, online video courses are also available. YouTube has a large database of video tutorials. Or finding a tutor that will show you sewing techniques in real-time is also available through Superprof.
