Swimming is a great activity to participate in because it’s an incredibly low-impact workout that helps keep your heart rate up. In fact, it’s highly encouraged by doctors and trainers since it helps build endurance, muscle strength, and maintain a healthy weight. The benefits of swimming are numerous, but let’s also recognize the difficulty it takes to become a professional swimmer. It’s a sport that engages every single muscle in the body and each stroke uses said muscles differently.
That being said, if you’re considering taking swimming lessons then you’re in for a fun and physically demanding experience you won’t forget nor regret. Boston University actually has an incredible team of synchronized swimmers, which is considered to be an art as it requires the fluid movements of a ballet dancer and the strength of a diver. However, the only requirement the BU team has is being a strong swimmer, so maybe one day you might be interested in joining the club yourself. Better yet, during your lessons, you’ll come to appreciate and admire the dedication it takes these athletes to become successful in their fields.
Swimming is an important life skill that should be taught at a young age and many parents are encouraged to teach their babies as a way of survival. If you research videos of babies tossed into pools in order for them to swim, you’ll see how babies use their natural survival skills to float back up to the surface. And it’s no secret that one of the most common causes of drowning is adults and kids falling into water without knowing how to stay afloat or swim to safety.
Another great life skill that comes from swimming is time management, especially if you’re taking swimming lessons while you’re a student. Being a part of a sport teaches you how to take the little free time you have in your day to get what needs to be completed done in time. It also makes you more disciplined since swimming involves a lot of goal-setting. Proper breathing is also a skill that shouldn’t go unnoticed as this sport will teach you how to use proper breathing techniques to improve performance similar to track and field.
Although it may not be the first thing that comes to mind, swimming can most certainly be considered a social skill that promotes children and adults to interact with each other. Like any other activity, swimming for fun can essentially lead to sports like speed swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo and even diving. So being enrolled in swimming lessons is a smart way to stay healthy, but also encourage yourself to step outside your comfort zone. Especially if you’re someone that isn’t comfortable around or in water.
Overall it’s a fun activity that can also help one build one’s confidence and self-belief by facing the challenge of swimming head-on and seeing improvement along the way. Besides, it can come to be a very exciting time in your life as it will expose you to new people, training techniques, and learn how to take direction and use it to your advantage. Working with a team to achieve a common goal can be a very rewarding experience and highly beneficial to one's social life. There are studies that reveal how exercising and socializing together lead to improved mental health, so you’ll be in great hands!
Although swimming is a low-impact sport, it’s still a physically demanding activity that requires you to adequately prepare for it, so here are a few tips to keep in mind. Eat a light healthy meal an hour before your swim lesson since you’ll require lots of energy while still giving your body enough time to process your meal. Try to fit an extensive land-based warm-up that includes dynamic stretching, activation exercises, and mobilization. You can find a lot of helpful videos online that go over each warm-up in detail.
And just because you’re swimming in water doesn’t mean you don’t need to stay hydrated, so make sure you pack enough water and or electrolytes. After your lessons, you want to take the time to have a quick post-training snack like nuts, greek yogurt, or apples with peanut butter to refuel your body followed by a meal. Stretching after practice using a foam roller is also highly encouraged to help your body and muscles recover properly. Lastly, make sure to get enough sleep in order for your body to relax and prepare for your next lesson.
