A slur is a notation symbol showing which notes should flow together using only the valves.

• Continuous airflow: a steady stream of air links every note in the slur.
• Valve changes only: you switch pitch with your fingers, not your tongue.
• Smooth sound: slurred notes blend together instead of sounding separated.
• Contrast with tonguing: tongued notes are articulated, slurred notes are not.

With guided practice, slurring becomes second nature and improves your phrasing.

A private trumpet lesson in Troutdale costs approximately $60/h.

Pricing can vary based on:

• Your current level (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• The lesson format (online, at home, at the tutor's)

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their approach.

Self-teaching trumpet works for the basics, but some skills are hard to build alone.

• Embouchure: small mistakes here are easy to miss without a second pair of eyes.
• Breath support: efficient breathing habits are easier to learn with hands-on guidance.
• Bad habits: mistakes can go unnoticed and become hard to fix later.
• Motivation: staying consistent is harder without structured lessons and accountability.

Pairing self-study with occasional coaching often gives the best results.
