I've been school prefect and a ranker. I'm a district level basket ball player.

First, I make students understand the concept and then do a sum related to it and explain them. Though the method changes based on students understanding but I generally follow this method. I believe, if students by heart , they tend to forget it sooner that's why conceptual understanding is important.
