About Matthew

Hi there! I'm Matty, a second-year History student hoping to help GCSE and A Level students achieve their goals through friendly and helpful sessions. I consider myself to be an excellent communicator and a highly empathetic person and though I emerged from school with high grades, this was not entirely due to natural giftedness but rather hard work and dedication over the course of many years. Therefore, I feel I can relate to students who are struggling to get the grades they want and can approach the subject from their point of view, working in a flexible way that does not condescend nor overwhelm students. Now entering the second year of my degree and achieving a 1st on end of 1st year essays, I feel that I am working at a sufficiently high level to be able to tutor A Level and GCSE students while still having my own A Levels and GCSEs in recent memory to ensure that I can relate to students and see difficulties from their perspectives.

About the lesson

You can expect lessons to be relaxed, friendly and tailored to your own specific aims and requirements with an empathetic and open-minded approach. Having brought my grade up from a C to an A* over the course of my A Levels, I have picked up many strategies and tips for improving grades that I feel I can share with other students to boost their grade. Particularly, I have a rigorous understanding of the exam technique and mark schemes behind essays and can work with students to break this down and share the often simple changes that will have a big impact on how essays are received by markers. We can work through essay technique and vocab together, create essay plans or offer feedback on previous essays you give me, whatever works best for you. I am also happy to explain, practise and quiz the historical content of your studies, putting complex topics into language that you can understand and working on strategies to help you memorise content in a manageable way.
