About Frederick

Hi! My name is Frederick and I am an experienced teacher of Cambridge International AS Physics (9702) and A-Level Mathematics (9709). I wrote the A-Level exams myself from 2008-2010, and had a final grade of 3A*s (in Maths, Physics and Chemistry) and an A in Economics.

I have been teaching Cambridge A-Level students since 2016 and specialise in helping students master difficult concepts and perform strongly in examinations. Over the years, I have helped many students improve their confidence and achieve excellent grades.

In addition to teaching, I also assist with grading Cambridge AS-Level Physics scripts, which gives me a very good understanding of how examiners award marks and why students lose marks. I use this insight to train students in the exact techniques needed to maximise marks in Cambridge examinations.

Students often tell me that I explain concepts in a very clear and patient way, and that lessons are fun and impactful!

If you are preparing for your Cambridge exams and would like support in achieving your best possible grade, I would be very happy to help, and I believe you'll not regret it!

DURING LESSONS WE:
• Break down difficult ideas into simple steps
• Solve challenging past-paper questions together
• Learn how to structure answers to gain full marks

My goal is not just to solve questions, but to help students develop deep understanding and confidence in Physics and Mathematics.

ABOUT LESSONS
Lessons are conducted online (in English) and would typically be 1hr - 1hr 30 mins long. However, I can spend longer if needed! They are suitable for:
Cambridge AS Level Physics
AS-Level Mathematics
A Level Mathematics

I can also teach other bodies such as OCR, Edexcel and even SAT Mathematics

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I remember tutoring people since I was about 13 years old in high school. I've always enjoyed explaining and helping people with math and my subjects. I worked as a consultant for some time after graduating from school, but I decided to leave my job and pursue teaching because I've always been passionate about it. It was a scary choice but I thankfully have no regrets!
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach mathematics and physics, most commonly at A-Levels! Yes there are naturally some topics I prefer (like I have a physics background so naturally I prefer mechanics, but not statistics math). However, I had to learn to teach (and enjoy) statistics and I thankfully have received good feedback from students. I believe almost anything can be learned with the right amount of practice and guidance!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have had wonderful teachers at school. For example, my physics professor at University really inspired me and deepened my understanding of Physics! I also have people I admire--I have had mentors that taught me the importance of patience with students, which is important when dealing with students.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good understanding of the subject and an ability to break it down so people 'get it!' Also lots and lots of patience, knowing that at times some concepts are difficult and require time to get--it's not an easy thing to do and excel at--but it can be learned with practice and time
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

There was a particular year I taught A-Level physics where all my students (about 5 or 6 of them) except one (who generally struggled with school at the time) achieved an 'a' grade (the highest grade) in AS Levels. Several students had struggled with good grades at physics before then. I am thankful that this happened!
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Teaching is great, and can be demanding at times--especially in schools- it really requires a lot of patience and willingness to help students if one is to excel at it. The programs I teach are not easy--and really require a lot of investment--but I am thankful I've been able to support students to the best of my ability despite the difficulties at times!
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I love teaching! I also like playing basketball and piano and chess!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I have learned to give my best and to help students understand concepts as best as I can, and to explain things in a way that makes sense to students! I have learned to be patient and interactive with students as well, and make learning an enjoyable experience! I believe that these are qualities that are desired in a superprof!
